Vermont National Guard
The Vermont Army National Guard began on October 24, 1764, when the town of Bennington, Vermont elected to form a militia company to protect their property from land speculators in New Hampshire and New York. Other towns soon followed suit and formed militias of their own. These small units later banded together into The Green Mountain Boys, led by Ethan Allen. The Green Mountain Boys fought to protect settlers’ interests and then for independence from British rule.
The Vermont Air National Guard formed as the 134th Fighter Squadron in Burlington, Vermont, on July 1, 1946. The 134th is descended from the 530th Fighter Squadron “Yellow Scorpions,” which flew during World War II.
