St. James Missionary Baptist Church (Austin, TX)
Nestled at 3417 East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, St. James Missionary Baptist Church stands as a beacon of faith, fellowship, and community outreach on the east side of Austin. Founded in 1927, it has long served as a spiritual home for Christians who were historically excluded from other congregations, grounded in a philosophy of radical hospitality that reaches across age, ethnicity, and orientation. It has now transcended these beginnings to be an inclusive church for people of all creeds and colors.
Its current sanctuary, a spacious and welcoming structure capable of seating over 2,500 worshippers, was erected following the “United We Build Campaign” initiated in 1997 under the leadership of Dr. McClendon. Inside, the worship experience is enriched by a vibrant choir, modern audiovisual systems, and thoughtful spaces such as a children’s area, a library, and a bookstore, designed to make all feel valued and engaged.
